BENG4004-Process Design

This course will cover topics related to the application of biological, biochemical, and engineering fundamentals in the area of bioprocess engineering. Students will review concepts associated with molecular biology, cell biology, genetic engineering, biochemistry and microbiology. Advanced topics will include bioprocessing kinetics (enzymes, cell growth, substrate utilization, and product formation); bioreactor design and selection; bioprocess scale-up; and the role of bioprocess engineering in medicine. The purpose of the course is to review the basics of material and energy balances and applications of this knowledge in biosystems; such as cell growth and product formation in bioreactors will be studied. The design of the bioprocess selected e.g. fluids in cell cultures, fermentation or bioproducts processes will be taught to students.
